Two weeks ago, Michel's vacation got off to a very bad start. "In the morning, when I got up, the two front doors of my camper van were ajar," he told TF1 in the report at the top of this article. Parked on a motorway service station, his vehicle was broken into while he was sleeping. "We were two metres away and we didn't hear a thing," he continued. The thieves stole 70 euros in cash. As is often the case, there was no sign of a break-in. "There is absolutely nothing on the door frames, the handles were not forced. I was far from thinking that something like this could happen to us," the vacationer said.
Flights have doubled in three years
Every summer, burglaries inside motorhomes resurface all over France. To combat this phenomenon, police officers patrol throughout the summer. “We are mainly looking for people who may be hooded, balaclavas, people who have lamps, who are prowling around vehicles,” explains squadron leader Nicolas.
The aim is to protect motorhome owners, particularly on motorway service areas. At night, they are one of the favourite targets of thieves. In the Côte-d'Or department, the number of thefts from inside motorhomes has doubled in three years. Since the beginning of the year, the mobilisation of the police has helped to reduce the break-in rate, but the thieves often remain untraceable. “They are often professional criminals, however. They can use electronic tools that can lock the vehicle locking systems,” the police officer continues.

Sometimes, thieves go even further and steal camper vans. A few days ago, Emmanuel and Evelyne had to cut their holiday short. Their brand new camper van was stolen in the middle of the street in Montpellier. The vehicle cost 60,000 euros. “It disappeared between 8pm and 10:30pm. We are a bit devastated, we don’t believe it,” says Emmanuel. “It’s violent,” adds Evelyne.
According to insurers, 300 motorhomes are stolen each year. So, many owners are looking for solutions. “It’s my little tracker. It’s very simple, you put it in the vehicle and I have an application on the phone” , shows a motorhome owner. GPS tracker , steering wheel lock… Enough to hope for a peaceful holiday and to peacefully enjoy the last weeks of summer.
